Psssst… This is the secret the dog food industry would rather keep quiet.

Psssss… Dit is het geheim waar de hondenvoer-industrie liever over zwijgt.

You may have seen our flyer, or heard or read something about it at some point. Maybe at the dog park, maybe somewhere else. You can see the photo in this blog too: on one side, the perfect golden-brown kibble from the marketing brochures. On the other: a grey, metallic mixture full of unidentifiable scraps.

Your first reaction was probably: “Ugh, that’s an exaggeration. That’s not in MY premium meat kibble.”

And that’s exactly what the billion-euro dog food industry wants you to think. They sell you a dream of ‘fresh meat’, ‘human grade’ and ‘natural ingredients’. But the reality is, quite literally, waste.

Today we’re really lifting the lid. We’re digging deeper into the facts, because your dog deserves better than a horror story in their bowl.

1. The dangerous truth about the “metal meal”

The most shocking fact: meat kibble is full of heavy metals. But how on earth do they get in there?

Most meat kibble is made from cheap leftover waste: organs (liver, kidneys), bones and carcasses. These parts are cheap because they’re often unfit for human consumption. The reason? These very organs are the body’s ‘filters’. They build up toxic substances from the environment.

The large-scale study by Zafalon, R.V.A. et al., published in Scientific Reports (2021), is conclusive:

Of the 72 mainstream dog foods tested, ALL (100%) contained too much mercury. On top of that, 95.8% of the foods contained too much lead.

When your dog takes in these metals every day, they don’t just disappear. They build up in your best friend’s organs, which in the long run can lead to serious damage to the brain, kidneys and liver. The marketing promises fresh meat, but often delivers a toxic build-up.

2: Fake protein from feathers and hooves

Dog food labels often show a high protein percentage. That sounds good, because dogs need protein. But not all protein is created equal.

For manufacturers, meat meal is the cheapest way to bump up that percentage. Meat meal is a catch-all term for all the waste left over after slaughter. That includes feathers, hooves and bits of skin.

Scientific research (Swanson, K.S. et al., 2001) shows that the biological value of this kind of ‘fake protein’ is extremely low. Your dog can barely digest it. The protein percentage on the bag looks good on paper, but your dog’s body can’t do anything with it. The result? A bloated belly, poor stools and a dog missing out on essential building blocks.

3: Bones as a secret filler

Bones are a cheap filler for the industry. Lots of meat meal contains a dangerously high proportion of ground bone.

In the short term you might not notice a thing. But a chronic excess of calcium and phosphorus from these bone scraps upsets the body’s delicate mineral balance. Especially in young, growing dogs, this can lead to serious deformities of the joints and bones. Later in life, it can put a heavy strain on the kidneys.

The solution: reclaim the wag at the source

The traditional industry is built on treating symptoms: “Is your dog itchy? Give them hypoallergenic (but still meat-based) food.” But as long as you keep feeding your dog the source of the irritation, that toxic, poorly digestible industrial waste, you’re not solving anything.

At Muppet Meals, we believe health starts at the source. And that source is pure, clean and 100% plant-based.

Plant power contains no built-up heavy metals. Plant proteins are pure, hypoallergenic and extremely well absorbed by a dog’s body (as long as they’re properly prepared).

We’re swapping those grey commercial kibbles that don’t nourish but only fill for “Gold in the bowl”. Go for the power of plants.
