The dangers of poor dental health in dogs (and what you can do!)

De gevaren van een slecht hondengebit (en wat jij kunt doen!)

Did you know that more than 80% of pets over the age of three are walking around with an active dental problem? Because dogs are masters at hiding pain, it's often an invisible danger. Bad breath, sadly, is only the beginning.

From plaque to organ damage, a dog's mouth is full of bacteria. Without proper care, they stick to the teeth as plaque, which eventually hardens into tartar. This leads to painful, inflamed gums (gingivitis).

Left untreated, it becomes dangerous. Large amounts of bacteria can enter the bloodstream through the gums and spread through the body. This poses a direct and serious risk to vital organs:

  • The heart: Oral bacteria can cause inflammation of the heart valves and the inner lining of the heart.

  • Liver and kidneys: These organs filter the blood, which makes them extremely vulnerable to infections from these roaming bacteria.

Prevention is better than cure

Luckily, inflamed gums are the only stage of periodontitis that can still be reversed. So prevention is essential. The best way to keep teeth healthy is to brush your dog's teeth regularly. Using an enzymatic toothpaste is strongly recommended.
